Overall Pretty Good
By K. Carr
I ordered the SmartParts 8" frame from amazon and got it right away, in perfect shape. Two years ago, I got a digital photo frame from Edge Tech Corp. I was happy to see that things have progressed since then. The SmartParts frame was much easier to work with.
What wasn't clear to me from the description is that the SmartParts frame has internal memory for pictures as well as accepts an SD flash card. So I purchased the SD card and really didn't need it. Of course, if you have a camera with an SD card, then you can just insert that into the frame and away you go. No messing with PC software. I integrated scanned pictures, pictures from other family members and my own pictures, so I had to load them individually.
This frame is very basic -- no battery, just the power adapter which must be plugged in, no remote control. It accepts jpeg pics. I haven't loaded a video yet so I don't know which files it accepts. I don't see anything about mp3 files (the old Edge frame did allow mp3 files for music).
The SmartParts frame comes with its PC software installation program loaded on the internal memory. Then it downloads software from the Web.
The software is pretty simple ... drag and drop pictures and then optimize them and copy them to the frame. I experimented with the SmartFit feature and it did not work well at all. If I dragged/dropped more than 1 or 2 photos and try to use this feature, my pc would hang. Finally, I just did 1 photo at a time and this worked okay except that the display was weird. Pink squiggly lines appear to show you what portion of the picture is going to be cropped but sometimes the resulting photo was not displayed. Even when everything looked good and I accepted the SmartFit changes, I would still find a photo with a head chopped off or even weirder ... the middle of the photo would be removed and picture subjects had no stomachs or were missing parts of their faces, etc.
I blew off SmartFit and just optimized all the photos and copied them to the frame. All looks good now -- no missing heads.
Since this frame is wider horizontally than vertically, landscape pictures look much better on it. Pictures that you rotate are small and squenched in the middle of the frame. I kind of realized that going into this so this did not surprise me.
This frame was $79 and is just as good as the $200+ Edge frame I purchased 2 years ago. Technology has really improved. Again, this frame is very basic but also very economical.

Specs are incorrect in product description
By G Cone
Aspect ratio is 3:2, not 4:3--doesn't fit my pictures. Resolution is 800 x 480, not 800 x 600.

Built to fail - not built to last....
By Mark S.
Purchased 3 of this company's frames in mid-2008 - 1 for our own use, 2 as gifts to family members. All 3 failed within 2 months after the end of the warranty. The warranty is only 90 days - Buyer BEWARE! They don't last much longer than that either. A letter to the manufacturer got a reply that they would be happy to exchange the current units and replace them with a refurbished unit - for an additional fee of about half what we had paid for them originally.
No way will we ever buy another one of these frames, or put another penny into getting them replaced. The warranty is way too short, and their products can barely make it past the warranty period before they die.
